Do they work in a professional environment? Do they exercise frequently? Do they prefer something polished and classic, or more relaxed and spontaneous? Do they enjoy styling their hair, or do they want something that falls naturally into place?
These questions influence the design.
A haircut should respect the natural movement of the hair rather than constantly fighting against it. The growth patterns, texture, density, cowlicks, and movement all tell the stylist something about how the hair wants to behave.
Good technique works with those characteristics.
The goal is not to create a hairstyle that looks impressive only because a professional stylist spent forty-five minutes finishing it.
The goal is to create a design that continues to have shape, balance, and character when the client styles it at home.
A haircut should belong to the person who wears it — not to the stylist who created it.
That principle has guided my work throughout my career.
When the design is right, the client should feel confident not only when leaving the salon, but every day afterward.
Beautiful in the salon.
Practical in real life.
Personal every day.

THE RIGHT HAIRCUT IS ABOUT BALANCE

https://www.adamolentini.com/article/inspired-by-the-colors-of-autumn

https://www.adamolentini.com/article/inspired-by-the-colors-of-autumn#comments

Autumn Look

low lights

Why proportion matters more than trendsFashion changes constantly. One season hair is short. Creating movement around the eyes can bring attention upward. Adjusting length around the jaw can completely change the perception of proportion.
This is why I do not believe in giving everyone the same haircut simply because a particular style is fashionable.
The question is not:
“What haircut is popular?”
The better question is:
“What haircut belongs to this person?”
That is where technique becomes design.
And when technique, observation, and creativity come together, design becomes artistry.

COLOR WITH INTENTION

https://www.adamolentini.com/article/image-foundation-for-a-new-look

https://www.adamolentini.com/article/image-foundation-for-a-new-look#comments

image

image consultation

new look

Right Hair Cut

Creating dimension rather than simply changing colorHair color should have a purpose. The goal is not simply to make hair lighter, darker, warmer, or cooler. Dimension can make fine hair appear fuller. Carefully placed highlights or lowlights can emphasize movement in the haircut and create depth.
The haircut and the color should never feel like two separate services.
They should tell the same story.
Before recommending a color, I consider the entire image: the person's natural coloring, lifestyle, maintenance expectations, and the design of the haircut.
The objective is not simply beautiful color.
It is beautiful color on the right person.
When shape, texture, movement, and color work together, the result feels effortless — even when considerable technique was required to create it.

THE ART OF IMAGE CONSULTATION

https://www.adamolentini.com/article/scalp-health-part-1

https://www.adamolentini.com/article/scalp-health-part-1#comments

Hair Loss

Itchy Scalp

Scalp Health

Scalp Problems

Seeing the person before designing the hairA consultation should never be simply, “How short would you like it?” or “What color are we doing today?”For me, consultation is where the creative process begins. Before I pick up my scissors, I study the person in front of me. I look at facial structure, proportion, hair texture, density, natural growth patterns, skin tone, lifestyle, personality, and the way the individual wants to present themselves.
Every person is different. Therefore, every haircut should be different.
A style that looks beautiful on one person may be completely wrong for another. The goal is not to reproduce a photograph or follow a trend. The goal is to understand why a particular shape, length, movement, or color works for that individual.
I often describe it this way:
The face is the portrait.
The hair is the frame.
A beautiful frame should never overpower the portrait. It should complement it.
The same principle applies to hair.
A successful consultation creates trust between the client and the stylist. It allows us to move beyond simply cutting hair and begin designing an image that feels natural, balanced, and personal.

HEALTHY HAIR BEGINS WITH THE SCALP

https://www.adamolentini.com/article/image-consultation-part-two

https://www.adamolentini.com/article/image-consultation-part-two#comments

haircuts

image

image consultation

new look

A thoughtful approach to scalp and hair careBeautiful hair does not begin with styling products. It begins with understanding the condition of the hair and scalp.
The scalp is the environment from which the hair grows, and good basic care matters.
Regular cleansing helps remove excess oil, styling products, and buildup while maintaining a comfortable scalp. The right shampoo and conditioning routine should be selected according to the individual's hair texture, scalp needs, styling habits, and lifestyle.
There is no single routine that is right for everyone.
Just as I analyze the hair before designing a haircut, hair care should also be individualized.
Changes such as persistent irritation, unusual shedding, sores, or significant changes in the scalp should not simply be covered with another product. Those concerns may have many possible causes and are best evaluated by an appropriate medical professional, such as a dermatologist.
As hairstylists, our responsibility is to observe, educate within our professional scope, and recognize when something requires medical attention.
Healthy-looking hair is ultimately the result of many things working together: appropriate care, good technique, thoughtful product selection, and respect for the natural characteristics of the individual.
