Seeing the person before designing the hair
A consultation should never be simply, “How short would you like it?” or “What color are we doing today?”
For me, consultation is where the creative process begins.
Before I pick up my scissors, I study the person in front of me. I look at facial structure, proportion, hair texture, density, natural growth patterns, skin tone, lifestyle, personality, and the way the individual wants to present themselves.
Every person is different. Therefore, every haircut should be different.
A style that looks beautiful on one person may be completely wrong for another. The goal is not to reproduce a photograph or follow a trend. The goal is to understand why a particular shape, length, movement, or color works for that individual.
I often describe it this way:
The face is the portrait.
The hair is the frame.
A beautiful frame should never overpower the portrait. It should complement it.
The same principle applies to hair.
A successful consultation creates trust between the client and the stylist. It allows us to move beyond simply cutting hair and begin designing an image that feels natural, balanced, and personal.
