Why proportion matters more than trends
Fashion changes constantly.
One season hair is short. The next it is long. Bangs return, disappear, and return again. Color trends change just as quickly.
But proportion does not go out of style.
When I design a haircut, I am thinking about balance: the relationship between the hair and the face, the head shape, the neck, the shoulders, and the overall silhouette.
Sometimes a very small adjustment can make an enormous difference.
Changing the weight around the cheekbones can soften the face. Creating movement around the eyes can bring attention upward. Adjusting length around the jaw can completely change the perception of proportion.
This is why I do not believe in giving everyone the same haircut simply because a particular style is fashionable.
The question is not:
“What haircut is popular?”
The better question is:
“What haircut belongs to this person?”
That is where technique becomes design.
And when technique, observation, and creativity come together, design becomes artistry.
